Marine Mechanical Engineer (Auxiliary), SME
This is a part-time position, anticipating approximately 10 hours per week.
Typical Responsibilities:
- Provide technical support and documentation design, develop, and evaluate the operation of marine vessels, ship machinery, and related equipment, to include, but not limited to: auxiliary systems, hydraulics weight handling equipment, rudders, piping, pumps, valves, and HVAC, and apply to applicable design and requirements.
- Develop system documentation and ship specifications.
- Provide leadership and coordinate review efforts for verification and validation work for Auxiliary and piping systems related work efforts in the Mechanical Engineering discipline.
- Design, develop and evaluate operation of marine vessels, shipboard auxiliary systems and piping, review and develop technical data packages, provide oversight on development of machinery arrangements, conduct and oversee trade studies.
- Review design review comments submitted by junior engineers and advise decisionmakers on considerations for high impact and critical design review decisions.
- Provide mentorship to junior mechanical engineers related to the area of shipboard auxiliary and piping systems, ship machinery integration, cargo handling systems, and weight handling systems calculations and analyses.
Location: Full remote permitted from most CONUS locations, or work onsite at USCG SFLC in Baltimore, MD.
Travel: Travel is not anticipated for this position.
Typical Physical Activity: Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve: repetitive motion.
Typical Pay Range: The anticipated pay range for this position in the identified location(s) is $81 - 91/hour. Actual compensation offered will be based upon individual factors including education, qualifications, and experience.
Eligibility for a SECRET Security Clearance is Required: This position requires eligibility for a Secret security clearance, to be obtained after hire. Only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance; therefore, only current U.S. citizens will be considered for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree in Marine or Mechanical Engineering, or another relevant technical, engineering, or a marine discipline from an ABET-accredited institution.
- At least fifteen (15) years of progressive experience in Mechanical Engineering disciplines, including:
- Ten (10) years of experience with design, optimization, and integration of marine auxiliary and piping systems, ship machinery integration, cargo handling systems, and weight handling systems calculations and analyses.
- One (1) year of experience related to federal ship or boat building acquisition programs.
- Experience providing mentorship to junior mechanical engineers.
- Knowledge of ABS, USN, and industry standards relating to shipboard auxiliary systems.
- Extensive knowledge of ABS, NVR, and commercial ship design rules and regulations.
- Proficient with common productivity software.
- Strong communications skills.
Additional Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Master’s degree in a relevant technical or engineering discipline.
- Professional certifications, such as PE License, PMP, DHS Systems Engineering Certification, or DHS Program Management Certifications.
- Experience leading auxiliary system work efforts for Government or commercial shipbuilding programs.
