Naval Architect (General), Senior
Typical Responsibilities:
- Provide technical assessments of shipbuilder design deliverables.
- Support development of HM&E and Auxiliary systems specifications.
- Support Technical Interchange Meetings (TIM) and capture action items.
- Coordinate and participate in the creation of technical papers, studies, and reports on emerging issues.
- Support the government in developing technical responses to contractor’s questions.
- Interface with the USCG Ship Design Team (SDT) and other USCG Technical Authorities.
- Analyze technical reports from third-party design validation sources and make recommendations to the Government.
- Provide technical support in the following areas: vessel Hull Form and stability, Weights, Structures, Powering and Resistance, and Propulsion.
- Provide support which includes updating the System Specification, SOW, CDRLs, and Indicative Design to adjudicate technical issues.
Location: Full time onsite at USCG Surface Forces Logistics Center (SFLC) in Baltimore, MD. After a probationary period, hybrid schedule may be permitted with customer approval.
Anticipated Travel: Up to 10% travel is anticipated for ship checks.
Typical Pay Range: The anticipated pay range for this position in the identified location(s) is $130,000 – 150,000. Actual compensation offered will be based upon individual factors including education, qualifications, and experience.
Typical Physical Activity: Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve: repetitive motion. Periodic visits to waterfront/shipboard environments. May involve: traversing shipboard environments (e.g., confined spaces, ladders, hatches) or vision.
Eligibility for a SECRET Security Clearance is Required: This position requires eligibility for a Secret security clearance, to be obtained after hire. Only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance; therefore, only current U.S. citizens will be considered for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil (Structural), Mechanical, or Marine Engineering, or Naval Architecture from an ABET accredited university or college.
- In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, eight (8) years of work experience, OR an Associate’s degree plus five (5) years of work experience, may be considered in substitution (in addition to other experience requirements identified below).
- At least six (6) years of recent, relevant experience of increasing responsibility in the engineering field of competence. Within this total experience, the candidate must have at least six (6) years primarily involving the following:
- Structural engineering concerns for naval or commercial vessels and marine structures
- Conduct, witness, and document tests including stability tests, speed, power, maneuvering, and seakeeping trials.
- Experience with naval architecture software solving complex problems regarding hull design.
- Experience with corrosion principles of metals for surface assets and boats.
- Knowledge of USN, USCG, IACS and/or commercial ship design rules and regulations.
- Must be proficient with common productivity software, including Microsoft Office.
- Must demonstrate excellent communication skills.
- Must have excellent time management skills and the ability to multi-task and prioritize work.
Additional Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Master’s degree in Structural Engineering or another comparable Engineering discipline.
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- At least one (1) year of demonstrated experience with U.S. shipbuilding acquisitions.
- At least one (1) year of demonstrated experience supporting a U.S. major system acquisition program (DHS/USCG Level I, DoD ACAT I or equivalent).
