THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated senior-level Naval Architect to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG)’s Ship Design Team in Baltimore, MD. An ideal candidate will have significant prior experience with U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding programs, standards, and regulations.
Typical Responsibilities:
- Provide technical support and documentation for ship feasibility, concept, preliminary and contract design, integration, stability analysis, hydrodynamic and seakeeping properties.
- Evaluate systems and equipment, develop and analyze requirements, perform studies and documentation relating to hull form, stability, weights, structures, and design.
- Develop system documentation and ship specifications for surface assets and boats, perform structural analysis and design using ISO and class society standards.
- Conduct, witness, and document tests including stability tests, speed, power, maneuvering, and seakeeping trials.
Location: Full time onsite at USCG Surface Forces Logistics Center (SFLC) in Baltimore, MD. May be limited "local remote" flexibility with customer approval.
Travel: Up to 10% travel is anticipated for ship checks.
Typical Pay Range: The anticipated pay range for this position in the identified location(s) is $120,000 – 150,000. Actual compensation offered will be based upon individual factors including education, qualifications, and experience.
US Citizenship Required: Due to the requirements of the federal contract that this position supports, U.S. citizenship is required. Citizenship will be confirmed via I-9/E-Verify at the start of employment.
Typical Physical Activity: Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve: repetitive motion. Periodic visits to waterfront/shipboard environments. May involve: traversing shipboard environments (e.g., confined spaces, ladders, hatches) or vision.
Security Clearance Eligibility Required: This position requires a DoD Secret security clearance. A qualified candidate must either already possess an active or interim Secret security clearance (preferred); OR be eligible for a Secret security clearance upon hire.
Typical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture or another relevant technical, engineering, or a marine discipline from an ABET-accredited institution.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- At least six (6) years of progressive experience in Naval Architecture.
- At least one (1) year of experience related to U.S. Federal or commercial ship or boat building acquisition programs required.
- Experience with DoD ACAT I or DHS Level I shipbuilding programs preferred.
- Experience with naval architecture software solving complex problems regarding hull design.
- Experience with corrosion principles of metals for surface assets and boats.
- Knowledge of USN, USCG, IACS and/or commercial ship design rules and regulations.
- Relevant certifications preferred, such as:
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
- DHS Systems Engineering certification.
- DHS Program Management certification.
- Proficient with common productivity software.
- Strong communications skills.
